Abstract: Medicinal Uses and Health Benefits of Cha-om (Acacia pennata)
Cha-om (ชะอม), or Acacia pennata, is a widely consumed edible plant in Thailand, valued both in traditional cuisine and herbal medicine. Rich in vitamins A, B, C, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and fiber, Cha-om offers a range of health benefits. It contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and beta-carotene, which provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Traditionally, Cha-om is used to relieve constipation, stimulate appetite, and support digestion due to its high fiber content and mild laxative properties.
In Thai folk medicine, Cha-om is applied as a poultice for muscle aches and swelling, and used to alleviate joint pain, especially in arthritis. Modern studies suggest it may help lower blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity, making it potentially beneficial for diabetes management.
